  • The 33rd ESPY Awards will be held July 16 at Los Angeles’s Dolby Theatre, airing live on ABC at 8 p.m. ET, streaming concurrently on ESPN+ and available on demand the next day on Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+.
  • Gillis is the creator and star of Netflix’s Tires and co-host of Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast, drawing on his background as a former college football player and ardent Notre Dame fan.
  • ESPN vice president and ESPYs executive producer Craig Lazarus praised Gillis as one of today’s top comedians whose genuine sports enthusiasm made him an easy choice to emcee the show.
  • The comedian faced a 2019 controversy over a resurfaced 2018 podcast clip containing an anti-Asian slur that led to his dismissal from Saturday Night Live, but he has since returned to host SNL twice and maintained a thriving stand-up career.
  • Proceeds from the ESPYs benefit the V Foundation for Cancer Research, continuing ESPN’s long-standing partnership founded by coach Jim Valvano in 1993.
