Shallow 5.8 Quake Rattles Assam’s Udalguri as Aftershocks Follow

Officials report two injuries plus scattered damage, with assessments continuing.

Overview

  • The National Centre for Seismology logged a magnitude 5.8 event at 16:41 IST with a depth of 5 km near Udalguri, while other agencies reported 5.5–5.9.
  • Tremors were widely felt across Assam including Guwahati and districts such as Sonitpur and Nalbari, reaching parts of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh (Itanagar), North Bengal and Bhutan.
  • Within about 90 minutes, NCS recorded aftershocks of M3.1 and M2.7 in Udalguri and M2.9 in Sonitpur.
  • ASDMA said two girls in Udalguri were injured when a hostel ceiling collapsed, and multiple districts reported minor structural damage such as cracks and fallen plaster.
  • Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said teams are on the ground with helplines active, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi called to assure central support; many users also reported receiving Android Earthquake Alerts, in some cases before shaking was felt.
