Shallow 5.2 Quake Off Euboea Jolts Athens, No Major Damage Reported

Civil protection teams mobilized for checks after seismologists flagged likely aftershocks from the shallow offshore event.

Overview

  • The Institute of Geodynamics recorded a magnitude 5.2 tremor at about 00:30 local time roughly 4 km off Nea Styra, some 45–50 km northeast of Athens.
  • The quake struck at a depth of about 2.3 km and was widely felt in the capital, where ERT’s live broadcast captured shaking as local officials described very intense tremors.
  • There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, though residents in parts of Evia reported staying outdoors as a precaution.
  • A smaller aftershock was recorded within minutes, and Greece’s earthquake authority said additional aftershocks, potentially above magnitude 4, are expected as data analysis continues.
  • Civil Protection Minister Yiannis Kefalogiannis said vehicles were deployed to eastern Attica and southern Evia for inspections, with experts noting there is no reason for concern at this stage.
