Shah Opens CBI Conference With Push for Faster Extraditions, Special Jails, Passport Cancellations

The CBI-led meeting outlined proposals to fast-track extraditions through new technology, stricter custody standards, dedicated state cells.

Overview

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the two-day New Delhi conference and urged a ruthless approach, proposing state-level prisons meeting international standards, passport cancellation upon Interpol Red Notices, a national fugitives database, and wider use of trial-in-absentia under the BNS.
  • CBI Director Praveen Sood reported 388 Indian extradition requests pending with foreign countries and 957 Interpol Red Notices issued to date, with publication times cut from about 14 months to roughly three months through the Bharatpol portal.
  • Officials said passport revocation would curtail fugitives’ cross-border movement, and special custody facilities are intended to counter defense arguments about Indian jail conditions raised in foreign courts by suspects such as Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi.
  • Shah called for expert extradition cells in every state, stronger coordination to upgrade Interpol blue notices to red notices, better protocols between passport authorities and police, and real-time cooperation via the CBI’s Global Operations Centre.
  • The CBI meet brings central and state police with MEA and MHA officials to map strategies on narcotics, terrorism, cybercrime, organised crime and economic offences, with deliberations focused on both formal and informal international cooperation channels and financial tracking.
