SFPD Releases Video of Market Street Encounter Where Officer Shot Man and Dog

Parallel internal and outside reviews are examining whether the officer’s actions met department use-of-force rules.

Overview

  • Police presented body-worn camera and surveillance footage at a virtual town hall detailing the Nov. 9 confrontation near Market and O'Farrell streets.
  • Video shows an off-leash husky–shepherd mix biting a bystander before officers located owner Trusten Eaton, 29, and ordered him under arrest.
  • Footage captures an officer warning Eaton about the dog, the dog lunging, the officer shooting the dog in a leg, and Eaton then throwing a bottle before being shot in the leg.
  • Police said they learned after detaining Eaton that the bottle he threw was plastic; the dog later bit an officer during the arrest.
  • Eaton and the dog were treated for non–life-threatening injuries, and the case is under review by SFPD investigative units, Internal Affairs, the Department of Police Accountability, and the District Attorney’s independent bureau.
