SFPD Releases Footage of Officer Shooting Man with Knife and Crossbow at Chinese Consulate
Zhanyuan Yang, identified as a Chinese national, crashed vehicle into consulate lobby filled with 30 people and allegedly swung knife at officer; motive still unclear while investigations continue.
- Zhanyuan Yang, a 31-year-old Chinese national, crashed his vehicle into the Chinese consulate building in San Francisco, which is being investigated as a potential deliberate act. There were about 30 people in the lobby at the time of the crash.
- Security guards initially restrained Yang until police arrived. Sgt. Troy Carrasco, the first officer to arrive on the scene, fatally shot Yang within seconds of making contact with him, after Yang allegedly swung a knife at him.
- In addition to a 3.5-inch knife, officers found a loaded crossbow in the back of Yang’s vehicle after the shooting. One witness reported that Yang exited the vehicle yelling, “Where’s the CCP?” — an apparent reference to the Chinese Communist Party.
- Yang had previously started a communications firm while attending college in China, and later took college classes in San Francisco and attended the San Francisco Art Institute. He had recently struggled to pay rent and spent time playing video games, shooting his bow and arrow, and flying his drone.
- The motive for the crash and alleged attack remain unclear, despite multiple ongoing independent investigations. Investigators have seized evidence from Yang's apartment but have not released a potential motive.
- The incident occurred inside a consulate, which is considered foreign soil. It took place shortly before the city was due to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, a significant gathering of world leaders from Pacific Rim nations.
