SFA Bans Hamilton Owner and Director as Not Fit and Proper, Leaving Club Without a Director

The ruling sets a seven-day deadline for Hamilton to outline compliance under threat of further disciplinary action.

Overview

  • Scottish FA investigators ruled Seref Zengin and Gerry Strain are not fit and proper, barring them immediately from any role influencing Hamilton’s management.
  • The SFA cited Zengin’s responsibility for repeated failures to pay players, HMRC and pension funds, and Strain’s direct involvement in SPFL breaches, CAS removal, child wellbeing shortcomings, and paying amateurs and trialists under an embargo.
  • With Jock Brown having resigned and Strain now barred, the club has no directors, and it must explain within seven days how it will comply or face further proceedings.
  • Strain says he learned of the decision from media reports and is seeking urgent legal advice, while Zengin says he has complained to the Scottish Government and is pursuing a sale of his 97% stake.
  • Police Scotland confirms enquiries are ongoing into a fraud report received on 23 May, and supporters have called an emergency meeting to explore ways to help preserve the club.
