Seveso Overflows in Milan as Atlantic Storms Hammer Northern Italy

Authorities report river surges, landslides and transport shutdowns, with orange alerts in force for Liguria and northern Lombardy.

Overview

  • The Seveso overflowed in Milan’s Niguarda/Pratocentenaro late morning after hours of heavy rain, and civil protection urged residents in flood‑prone areas to avoid basements and move to safety.
  • The Milan and Senago flood‑control basins were activated in the morning, and the Senago facility reached capacity around 10:00 shortly before the overflow.
  • Localized downpours delivered more than 80 mm north of Milan (Paderno Dugnano, Seveso), about 30 mm in the city, over 265 mm in the Alta valle Bormida and up to 413 mm at Dego in Liguria.
  • Landslides and debris closed the SP583 Lariana between Como and Blevio and the SS340 Regina near Colonno, flooding the Como city center and lakefront streets, with no injuries reported in a car struck by a slide.
  • Transport disruptions spread across the region, with Milan’s M4 closed until 15:00 during a general strike, rail traffic suspended on AlessandriaSavona at San Giuseppe di Cairo, broader Trenord/Trenitalia slowdowns, over 70 firefighter interventions and widespread school closures in Liguria and parts of the Alessandrino.
