Seveso Floods Northern Milan After Deluge as Basin Barrier Is Damaged

Authorities face urgent repair decisions for the Parco Nord barrier following calls to complete upstream works.

Overview

  • Floodwaters inundated Niguarda, Ca’ Granda and Isola for about nine hours from late morning, turning major roads into fast-moving streams.
  • The Parco Nord/Bresso lamination basin opened around 8 a.m. and filled; a large tree trunk later struck a movable barrier, with damage under assessment and restoration timing not yet defined.
  • Senago’s two basins were activated for the first time alongside other upstream controls, yet the flow overwhelming the Seveso still reached urban districts.
  • Emergency services reported assistance requests from 13 schools, evacuated two, and carried out roughly 100 interventions, including at the Tribunal for flooded offices.
  • Heavy rainfall measured roughly 100 millimetres in northern Milan and exceeded 200 millimetres in parts of the Canturino and Comasco areas, renewing political pressure to finish Lentate and the larger Paderno–Varedo projects as environmental groups urge river-valley restoration beyond basins.
