Severe Weather Hits Mexico, Spain and Argentina as Front 27 and Storm Systems Persist

Official forecasts signal hazardous rain, wind and temperature extremes across Mexico, Spain and Argentina.

Overview

  • Mexico’s weather service reports a stationary Front No. 27 and the season’s second winter storm are driving very cold to frigid conditions, widespread precipitation and a prolonged Norte along the Gulf and Tehuantepec through Tuesday.
  • Very heavy to intense rainfall of 75–150 mm is forecast in Veracruz (Los Tuxtlas and Olmeca), west Tabasco and northwest Chiapas, with additional strong rains in Oaxaca and parts of the Yucatán Peninsula and warnings for flooding and river rises.
  • Wintry hazards in northern and central highlands include possible snow or sleet in Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa (sierra), Coahuila, Nuevo León and Zacatecas, risk of freezing rain in several states, subzero minimums in high terrain and coastal waves up to 3.5–4.5 meters on Veracruz, Tabasco and the Gulf of Tehuantepec.
  • AEMET projects an anomalously warm week in Asturias and has issued a yellow wind warning for Tuesday with gusts near 90 km/h, while Galicia town forecasts cite a very high chance of rain today with southerly gusts around 60–68 km/h.
  • Argentina’s SMN advises heat with afternoon and evening thunderstorms in Mendoza, maintaining a yellow alert for San Rafael and General Alvear with hail risk, and separate alerts point to a stronger storm episode in other provinces including a red alert for San Luis and rain expected to reach Buenos Aires on Thursday.
