Severe Weather Disrupts Travel Across Germany

Freezing rain and heavy snowfall cause fatal accidents, suspend flights at Munich Airport, and disrupt train services.

  • Munich Airport suspended all flights on Tuesday morning due to freezing rain, with further cancellations expected throughout the day. The airport had also shut down on Saturday due to heavy snowfall.
  • Three people died in traffic accidents in Germany on Tuesday due to the freezing rain and cold weather. One student was killed in a crash involving a school bus in the Erzgebirge mountains in the eastern German state of Saxony, and two other people died in a collision between a car and a tractor-trailer on the A8 highway in Upper Bavaria.
  • Train operator Deutsche Bahn warned that traffic in the Munich region would be affected for several days. All trains on the Munich to Salzburg, Munich to Innsbruck, and Munich - Lindau/Zurich routes were currently canceled.
  • Heavy snowfall also led to significant traffic disruptions in parts of southern Germany over the weekend, with local trains, buses, and trams also stopping running.
  • Southern Germany as well as neighboring Austria and Switzerland have been experiencing heavy snowfall which has affected public transport all over the region and led to alarm about possible avalanches.
