Severe Thunderstorms Threaten Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Under Evening SPC Watch

The threat is expected to fade overnight as a cold front pushes offshore.

  • Severe Thunderstorm Watch 607 is in effect from 1:10 p.m. to 8 p.m. EDT for parts of CT, DE, MA, northeast MD, ME, NH, NJ, southeast NY, eastern PA, RI, southeast VT and adjacent coastal waters, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
  • Tens of millions of residents, including major metros from Philadelphia through New York City to southern Maine, are under severe-weather alerts this afternoon and evening.
  • Forecasters cite scattered damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, isolated hail up to 1 inch and the possibility of a brief tornado or two, with localized flash flooding possible.
  • The highest flash-flood risk is focused from Philadelphia to Bridgeport, Connecticut, where training downpours could trigger scattered flooding in vulnerable spots.
  • Localized warnings have already been issued, including severe thunderstorm warnings with 60 mph gusts and quarter-size hail in parts of southeast Pennsylvania and brief tornado warnings earlier in western Massachusetts and northern Connecticut.
