Severe Thunderstorms Hit Southern and Eastern Germany After June Heatwave

Emergency services faced hundreds of calls as forecasters predict a cooler, unsettled spell followed by a modelled chance of renewed heat in early July.

Overview

  • The storms, which moved north from Austria and hit late Monday, brought heavy rain, hail and strong gusts concentrated in Bavaria and parts of Saxony.
  • Fire brigades and rescue teams processed hundreds of weather-related operations, with about 150 calls in Munich and more than 300 in Landkreis Schwandorf that deployed over 400 personnel.
  • Flooded basements, fallen trees and local infrastructure damage forced transport disruption including multiple affected S-Bahn lines and some flight delays or cancellations.
  • The Deutscher Wetterdienst issued regional warnings for hail, storm gusts and intense rainfall of roughly 25–50 liters per square meter in short periods and then forecast continued thunderstorm risk over the next days.
  • After a June that DWD called the second-warmest on record, ensemble models show an uncertain but plausible rebuild of high pressure from around July 4–7 that could push temperatures back toward 30–37°C in parts of Bavaria.
