Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Dauphin County

Record heat with high humidity fuels unstable air that increases the risk of damaging winds plus localized flash flooding over the next two days.

Overview

  • The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Dauphin County that remains in effect through 10:00 p.m., reporting a line of storms moving east at about 35 mph with 60 mph wind gusts possible.
  • The warning named multiple boroughs including Bloomsburg, Pottsville, Berwick and others and covered travel corridors on Interstate 80 (mile markers 228–247) and Interstate 81 (mile markers 102–139).
  • Officials warned those in the warning area to stay inside well-built structures and away from windows because gusts could damage roofs, siding and trees and create hazardous driving conditions.
  • Upper-90s temperatures with dew points in the lower to mid 60s are increasing atmospheric instability, raising the chance that strong storms will produce intense downpours.
  • Forecasters expect scattered storms to continue through about 10–11 p.m. with lingering showers overnight and additional rounds of scattered to possibly severe storms on Sunday and Monday that carry both damaging-wind and localized flash-flood risk.
