Overview
- A sudden outbreak of severe thunderstorms struck the Nuremberg/Mittelfranken area on Tuesday evening, producing heavy hail, strong winds and flash floods that generated roughly 3,000 emergency calls and about 3,000 responders for some 1,100 operations.
- Several people were injured during the storms, including one person seriously hurt after being struck by a falling tree and taken to hospital.
- The storms caused widespread but patchy infrastructure damage with the Nuremberg airport suspending operations temporarily, a regional train striking a fallen tree, and power outages affecting thousands of connections in places such as Reutlingen and parts of Kronach county.
- Tierheim Nürnberg reported flooded enclosures, fallen trees and destroyed event tents and has issued an urgent public appeal for two 6×4 m and two 3×3 m tents to keep a planned summer festival and animal care running.
- Emergency services and utility crews are shifting from rescue to repair while the Deutscher Wetterdienst continues to warn of more severe thunderstorms, including large hail and orkan-like gusts, through the coming days.
