Severe Storms Hit Central Argentina as SMN Maintains Orange Alerts

After a day of downpours and hail, forecasters expect temperatures to tumble with skies clearing into Monday.

Overview

  • Argentina’s national weather service kept orange and yellow alerts in place on Oct. 5 for storms across Buenos Aires (including CABA/AMBA), Córdoba, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos and other provinces, warning of 40–80 mm of rain, frequent lightning, hail and gusts above 90 km/h.
  • Widespread storms produced localized damage, including a large event tent destroyed in Olavarría, fallen trees, hail-covered streets in Venado Tuerto and very large hail reported in Bulnes.
  • Strong wind and Zonda alerts extended to cordilleran areas in provinces such as Mendoza, San Juan, La Rioja, Catamarca and Neuquén, with elevated-terrain gusts that could exceed 100 km/h.
  • In the AMBA, rain and thunderstorms persisted through Sunday with temperatures near 16–21°C, with forecasts indicating improvement overnight into Monday.
  • SMN projects a sharp cool-down to start the week with largely dry, stable conditions and a gradual warm-up toward Friday, following a brief warm spell that saw Córdoba reach about 35.7°C on Oct. 4.
