Severe Storms Drench Southeast France as Alerts Ease

Officials report no deaths, with flooding damage prompting ongoing recovery and selective closures.

Overview

  • Météo-France lifted orange alerts after midnight in Bouches-du-Rhône, Drôme, Isère and Vaucluse, with the Var downgraded around 3 a.m. and Côtes-d’Armor still on orange into Monday morning.
  • Bouches-du-Rhône firefighters reported about 300 interventions since Sunday, while the Var logged 165 by late evening, and no fatalities have been confirmed.
  • Rainfall peaked at 127 mm in Avignon, about 92 mm in roughly an hour in Aix-en-Provence, and around 94–113 mm in an hour near Toulon, triggering flash flooding and road closures.
  • Power outages reached up to 50,000 customers at the peak in the Var before dropping to about 15,000 late Sunday, as flights were diverted at Marseille-Provence and TER services gradually resumed.
  • Precautionary measures included closing schools in Rognac, shutting Avignon university campuses and parts of hospital services, and postponing OM–PSG to Monday 20:00 as well as the ToulonLa Rochelle rugby match.
