Overview
- Severe thunderstorms and isolated supercell storms moved across southern and central Germany on Tuesday evening into Wednesday, causing flash floods, large hail, downed trees and widespread local damage.
- The Integrated Control Centre in Nuremberg reported about 3,000 emergency calls over roughly five hours and mobilized around 3,000 personnel for roughly 1,100 operations as crews worked to clear streets and rescue people.
- Six Bundeswehr soldiers were injured by a lightning strike at a bivouac near Mittenwald, five lightly and one moderately, and multiple civilians were hurt in Nuremberg including one person seriously injured by a falling tree.
- Storms disrupted infrastructure: about 6,000 Reutlingen households lost power briefly, dozens in parts of Kronach remained without electricity into the next day, a regional train hit a fallen tree and Nuremberg airport temporarily halted flights; crews also contained a suspected heating-oil spill in the Unstrut river.
- The Deutscher Wetterdienst warns of more severe storms over Bavaria and southern Germany with hail up to golf-ball size, gusts near 120 km/h and heavy rain, and authorities say cleanup, repairs and heightened readiness will continue in the coming days.
