Severe Storms Batter NSW With Flash Floods, Landslide and Fatality

Conditions are expected to ease later today according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Overview

  • An overnight evacuation order for the Narrabeen Lagoon area was downgraded to Watch and Act, allowing residents to return with caution.
  • NSW SES responded to more than 1,400 incidents in 24 hours and carried out about 20 flood rescues, with repeated warnings not to drive through floodwaters.
  • Exceptionally heavy local falls were recorded on Sydney’s northern beaches, with up to roughly 250–260 mm in some pockets and waves reported near five metres, prompting widespread beach closures.
  • A landslide at Great Mackerel Beach damaged three properties and injured at least one person, with assessments and clean-up continuing.
  • Transport disruptions included road closures and buses replacing trains between Hornsby and Gosford, and some flights at Sydney Airport were delayed due to the downpours.
