Severe Storms Batter Central-Southern Brazil as Alerts Remain in Force

Overview

• Inmet maintains multi-state storm alerts to start the week, including an orange warning for the Federal District that allows for up to 100 mm of rain per day and winds near 100 km/h.
• Paraná’s civil defense reports 15 municipalities affected by the weekend storms, with 5,318 people impacted, 444 displaced, 60 left homeless, and 4,056 properties damaged.
• Localized extremes included a downburst identified in Araraquara with 100 km/h winds and 108.5 mm of rain, as well as washed-out pavement in Barretos and a crater in São Carlos.
• Authorities suspended classes and closed facilities in several cities as cleanup and inspections proceed, including school cancellations in parts of Paraná and Assis and the shutdown of Campo Grande’s Parque das Nações.
• Utilities report progress restoring power, with Equatorial normalizing supply for 90% of affected customers in Goiás and Energisa reporting service restored to 81% of impacted residences in Campo Grande.
