Severe Rain Prompts High-Level Warnings Across Southern Germany

A slow-moving Alpine low is driving dangerous moisture into southern Germany.

  • The national weather service and civil protection agency forecast widespread 50–80 liters per square meter with local peaks near 100 liters through Thursday morning.
  • The DWD issued Alarmstufe Rot in parts of Saarland, Rheinland-Pfalz, Hessen and Baden-Württemberg, warning of danger to life from flooding, inundated buildings and landslides.
  • Unwetterwarnung level 3 applies in areas including Unterfranken as well as the Regierungsbezirke Karlsruhe and Stuttgart, where prolonged downpours are expected.
  • In the Alps, precipitation will fall as snow above roughly 1,800 meters with up to ten centimeters of new snow possible by early Thursday.
  • Flood services report some gauges already above Meldestufe 1 with stage 2 possible, while northern Germany remains largely dry and sunny under a separate high-pressure influence.
