Overview
- Two CMEs that left the Sun on Nov. 9 and 10 struck around 23:00 UTC on Nov. 11, driving G4-level storming overnight with solar wind near 740 km/s and IMF Bz briefly near −55 nT.
- The CME from the Nov. 11 X5.1 flare is forecast to arrive later on Nov. 12, with SWPC calling for G4 conditions today and G3 lingering into Nov. 13.
- The X5.1 event triggered an R3 radio blackout over Europe and Africa and rapidly elevated proton flux, which climbed from S2 on Nov. 11 to S3 early on Nov. 12.
- Operators were warned about potential grid voltage control issues, satellite charging and drag, degraded HF and GPS performance, and increased radiation exposure on polar flights.
- Auroras were reported unusually far south, including parts of the southern United States and Mexico, with further widespread displays possible depending on magnetic orientation.
