Severe G4 Geomagnetic Storm Strikes Earth, NOAA Confirms

Forecasters warn of additional CMEs that could extend disruptions.

Overview

  • Auroras were seen far outside usual zones, with reports from southern U.S. states including Texas, Alabama and Florida, across Mexico, and as far south as Chile and Argentina, with sightings also noted in parts of Europe.
  • NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center reported severe conditions and noted brief impacts to GPS, radio communications and parts of the power grid, while advising continued vigilance by operators.
  • Mexico’s SCIESMEX/UNAM issued an alert and cautioned about potential degradation of satellite positioning and communications, as energy and telecom providers enacted contingency measures.
  • The disturbance stems from multiple coronal mass ejections from solar active region AR4274, including powerful X‑class flares such as an X5.1, with at least one CME confirmed to be Earth‑directed.
  • Forecasters said true intensity and timing remain uncertain until in‑situ solar‑wind readings are obtained and indicated a later, possibly stronger CME could still arrive, though the public faces no direct health risk.
