Severe Cyclonic Storm Hamoon Expected to Cause Heavy Rains in India, Fishermen Warned to Stay Ashore

Cyclone Hamoon, expected to intensify in coming hours, likely to bring heavy rainfall and high-intensity winds to Odisha, West Bengal, and other eastern districts while moving northeast towards Bangladesh, according to the Indian Meteorological Department.

  • India is witnessing the menace of twin cyclones brewing over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal simultaneously; the storm in the Bay of Bengal, named Cyclone Hamoon by Iran, has intensified into a 'severe' cyclonic storm.
  • The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rainfall warnings in several states, including heavy rainfall predictions for parts of Odisha and West Bengal; light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is also predicted for Kerala, Mizoram, and Tripura from October 23rd-25th.
  • Cyclone Hamoon is expected to weaken gradually as it moves northeastwards, crossing the Bangladesh coast on the evening of the 25th with wind speeds of 65-75 kmph.
  • Fishermen have been warned to avoid venturing into the West-central Bay of Bengal till October 25th and the North Bay of Bengal till October 26th due to turbulent sea conditions caused by the cyclone.
  • The Odisha government has directed district collectors to be on standby for any potential situation, especially evacuation measures for individuals residing in low-lying regions in case of heavy rainfall.
