Severe Cyclone Shakti Moves Offshore as IMD Sees No Immediate Threat to Maharashtra Coast

Forecasts indicate the system will turn and weaken from Monday, shifting concern to rough seas and inland rain rather than a coastal strike.

Overview

  • Classified as a severe cyclonic storm with winds near 100 kmph, Shakti is tracking west–southwest over the Arabian Sea and is expected to recurve east–northeast and weaken from October 6.
  • IMD Mumbai reports no cyclone threat to the state’s coast and expects only light to moderate rain for the city, with isolated heavier rain possible in Palghar around October 8.
  • Fishermen have been told to stay off the water as rough to very rough sea conditions and coastal gusts of 45–55 kmph, peaking to 65 kmph, persist along the Gujarat–north Maharashtra coast through Tuesday.
  • State and district authorities have activated disaster management plans, prepared evacuation options for low‑lying areas, and coordinated with NDRF under alerts in effect October 3–7.
  • Heavier impacts are forecast inland, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over East Vidarbha and parts of Marathwada and a risk of localised flooding in low‑lying pockets of North Konkan.
