Severe Cyclone Shakhti Strengthens Off Gujarat, Churns Arabian Sea

IMD expects an offshore track with a west-southwest move followed by recurvature early next week.

Overview

  • The storm has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained winds near 100–110 kmph and an estimated central pressure of about 992 hPa.
  • As of Saturday morning, it was centred roughly 420–470 km west of Dwarka, also southwest of Karachi, moving west to west-southwest toward the northwest and adjoining west-central Arabian Sea by October 5.
  • Forecast guidance indicates weakening from October 6–7 and no direct landfall on the Indian coast, though outer bands may bring rain to parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
  • Sea conditions are rough to very rough along and off the Gujarat–north Maharashtra and Pakistan coasts, and fishermen have been warned to avoid the northwest, northeast and central Arabian Sea through Tuesday.
  • Maharashtra has issued alerts for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg through October 7, with coastal winds of 45–55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph and heavy rain risks prompting disaster-preparedness measures.
