Overview
- The IMD said at 8:30 am IST on Oct. 4 that Shakhti intensified into a severe cyclonic storm about 470 km west of Dwarka and 420 km southwest of Karachi, with an estimated central pressure near 992 hPa.
- Sustained winds near 90–100 kmph with higher gusts are driving very rough to very high seas across the northwest, northeast and central Arabian Sea.
- The system is expected to track west‑southwest into the northwest and adjoining west‑central Arabian Sea by Oct. 5, then recurve east‑northeast from Oct. 6 and weaken gradually through Oct. 7.
- Coastal alerts cover Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg through Oct. 7, with 45–55 kmph winds gusting to 65 kmph along the north Maharashtra coast and strong advisories keeping fishermen ashore.
- Outer rain bands may bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to parts of Maharashtra, including East Vidarbha and Marathwada, with a risk of localized flooding in low‑lying North Konkan; the name “Shakhti” was contributed by Sri Lanka.
