Severe Cold Wave Grips North India as Dense Fog Alerts Stay in Force

Himalayan snowfall later this week could briefly shift conditions.

Overview

  • IMD issued orange alerts for dense to very dense fog in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar with a cold day alert for Bihar, and yellow fog warnings in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand and the Northeast through December 28–29.
  • Rajasthan remained the epicentre of the chill with Fatehpur in Sikar at 1.6°C and several districts below 5°C, as officials warned that cold wave conditions will persist for the next few days.
  • Kashmir and Ladakh recorded sub-zero nights with Srinagar at −2.2°C, Gulmarg at −5.4°C, Sonamarg at −7.3°C and Leh at −10.2°C, with generally dry weather till December 28 and light snow possible around December 29 into the New Year period.
  • Western Himalayan states are forecast to see rain and snow between December 27 and 29, including parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, with snowfall possible at higher elevations.
  • Regional contrasts continued as Delhi faced dense fog and very poor air quality (AQI 336), Bengaluru flights operated normally despite misty mornings, Telangana nights ran 3–4°C below normal with slight easing expected from December 27, West Bengal minimums fell by 2–3°C, and Tamil Nadu was warned of morning fog through December 28 with light coastal rain.
