Several Air India Flights Cancelled or Aborted After Last-Minute Technical Snags

Regulators have intensified safety inspections following a series of last-minute technical faults that forced cancellations and aborted takeoffs.

The cockpit crew decided to discontinue the take-off run, following Standard Operating Procedures, an Air India spokesperson said.
Air India said flight AI 504, scheduled to depart Cochin International Airport at 10:40 pm, faced a technical issue during its take-off roll.
Air India said the decision stems from a planned shortfall in its fleet as 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft undergo extensive retrofitting.

Overview

  • Flight AI138 from Milan to Delhi was cancelled during pushback on August 16 after a maintenance task was identified and the crew reached mandatory duty-time limits, leaving passengers stranded for nearly 12 hours.
  • Flight AI504 from Kochi to Delhi aborted its takeoff roll on August 17 due to a technical issue, with MPs Hibi Eden and Jebi Mather reporting a sudden skid and the service rescheduled for 1 a.m. with a replacement aircraft.
  • On August 17, AI2479 (Delhi–Leh) and AI613 (MumbaiAhmedabad) returned to the bay shortly after pushback over suspected technical or maintenance faults and later operated with alternate aircraft after multi-hour delays.
  • Air India and airport authorities said all affected passengers were deplaned and offered hotel accommodation, refunds or complimentary rescheduling, although travellers complained of long holds, non-functional systems and poor communication.
  • Air India CEO Campbell Wilson maintains that detailed inspections of the Boeing 787 fleet found no systemic defects, even as the DGCA and AAIB continue targeted probes and audits under heightened scrutiny.
