Seventy Giant Animal Puppets Arrive in Manchester to Launch MIF25 Parade

Life-sized cardboard beasts reinforced with plywood land in Cathedral Gardens to dramatise wildlife fleeing environmental disaster

Overview

  • Tonight at 6 pm the herd converges on Cathedral Gardens to interrupt a Manchester Camerata performance and officially launch the Manchester International Festival.
  • On Friday the procession moves to Heywood’s Aspinall Street at 7 pm and Queen’s Park, then on Saturday it will appear at Pennington Flash Country Park between 1 pm and 4 pm.
  • The procession features 70 life-sized safari animal puppets, including elephants and giraffes, crafted from upcycled cardboard and plywood.
  • The Walk Productions’ puppets began their 20,000 km journey from Kinshasa in April, traversing European cities to highlight global environmental challenges.
  • Presented by The Walk Productions under Artistic Director Amir Nizar Zubai, this free parade follows the 2021 Little Amal tour which journeyed from Turkey to the UK.
