Seven Women File Federal Suits Alleging Widespread Sexual Abuse at Illinois’ Largest Women’s Prison

The filings describe assaults in surveillance blind spots by correctional staff, including internal affairs officers.

Overview

  • The women filed separate complaints in federal court in Springfield on Wednesday accusing Logan Correctional Center staff of sexual assault and retaliation.
  • Plaintiffs say reports of abuse were ignored or punished through ransacked rooms, stolen or destroyed property, job loss, forfeited good-time credits, and pressure to recant.
  • One complaint says Amanda Daily was assaulted in a mental health unit and later attempted suicide on May 15, 2024 after reporting prior abuse and hearing nothing back from investigators.
  • The suits cite 223 PREA complaints at Logan since 2021, with about 6% substantiated, including 85 alleging staff sexual abuse, and reference a 2023 jury award of nearly $20 million in a separate case.
  • Logan houses about 1,000 people and serves many women with longer sentences, five plaintiffs remain incarcerated, and the Illinois Department of Corrections has not responded to requests for comment.
