Seven-Vehicle Crash on Icy M-59 in Pontiac Kills 34-Year-Old Driver

Authorities say icy pavement coupled with unsafe speeds triggered the crash.

Overview

  • The collision occurred just before 6 a.m. Monday on eastbound M-59 near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Pontiac.
  • A 2011 Chevrolet Aveo and a 2015 Chevrolet Impala hit an icy patch and struck a cable barrier, setting off a chain reaction.
  • The Aveo slid back on its side into a travel lane and was struck on the roof by a 2018 Ford F-150, killing the 34-year-old Aveo driver at the scene.
  • The Impala was rear-ended by a 2004 Dodge Dakota, and three additional vehicles crashed while trying to avoid the initial wrecks.
  • The Impala driver sustained minor injuries, other drivers were uninjured and wearing seat belts, alcohol is not suspected, and the investigation continues with the victim’s name withheld pending family notification.
