Seven Killed in Bassonia Minibus Taxi Crash on Comaro Road

Police have opened a culpable homicide case tied to an alleged brake failure under investigation.

  • JMPD reports the Toyota Quantum collided with a Ford Ranger at about 07:40 on Comaro Road between Tarentaal and Pieter Acryod in Bassonia.
  • Seven passengers—five women and two men aged 30 to 45—were declared dead at the scene, and the taxi driver and seven others were taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital with serious injuries.
  • The Ford Ranger driver was unharmed, and dislodged parts from the taxi reportedly hit a second bakkie traveling in the opposite direction, damaging its windscreen.
  • Officials say a suspected brake failure on the downhill stretch is being probed after the taxi struck a lamppost and then a tree.
  • JMPD, Gauteng Provincial Traffic, the SAPS crash investigation unit and emergency services responded, and an inquiry into possible culpable homicide is underway.
