Seven Jailed for Life in Greenock Doorstep Murder of Neil Canney

Tariffs reflected differing roles, with one defendant receiving credit for an early guilty plea.

Overview

  • Lady Drummond handed down life sentences at the High Court in Glasgow, setting minimum terms before parole eligibility for all seven men.
  • Dale Russell must serve at least 24 years, Martin McCusker 23, Brendan Balloch, Kieran Hendry and Michael Munro 21 each, Jack Benson 20 for providing transport, and Kieran Meechan 17 for his early plea.
  • Prosecutors said the group planned the attack, gathering beforehand and concealing their identities before traveling to Mr Canney’s home.
  • Neil Canney, 37, was shot when he opened his door as a gun was fired eight times in five seconds, with further rounds discharged into the house where several people, including two children, were present.
  • Six defendants were also convicted of the attempted murder of six people in the house, and Police Scotland and the Crown Office said the case should deter organized violent crime.
