Seven Injured in Kandivali Chawl Fire as Officials Investigate Cause

Authorities are investigating conflicting preliminary accounts of the Kandivali blaze's cause.

Overview

  • The blaze was reported at 9:05 am in a ground-floor shop described as a cloud kitchen at Ram Kisan Mestri Chawl in Kandivali East.
  • Three workers — Raksha Joshi (47), Durga Gupta (30) and Poonam (28) — suffered about 85–90% burns and were shifted to Kasturba Hospital for specialised care.
  • Four others — Shivani Gandhi (51), Nitu Gupta (31), Janaki Gupta (39) and Manaram Kumacat (55) — sustained burns ranging from 40% to 80% and were treated at ESIC Hospital.
  • Four fire engines responded and extinguished the fire by about 9:30–9:33 am after it spread through electrical wiring, installations and kitchen equipment.
  • Initial statements differ on the trigger, with one official citing an LPG cylinder blast or leak and others pointing to an electrical fault, and the fire brigade has opened a formal probe; a separate Kurla West shanty fire later saw no injuries.
