Overview
- Jakob Johnson was released by Houston during the Aug. 26 roster trim to 53, joining six other Germans who lost spots on NFL active rosters.
- The other cuts were Kilian Zierer (Browns), Lenny Krieg (Falcons), Leander Wiegand (Jets), Lorenz Metz (Buccaneers), Maximilian Mang (Colts) and Julius Welschof (Steelers).
- Because Johnson has more than four accrued seasons, he bypasses waivers and becomes a free agent eligible to sign directly with any team.
- The Texans could bring Johnson back on their practice squad, and separate reports mention unconfirmed interest from the Patriots.
- IPP rules allow teams an additional practice-squad slot for designated international players, making that a likely pathway for several of the other German prospects as the season approaches in early September.
