Overview
- Seven Los Angeles–area men were indicted June 11 and arrested by federal agents this month for allegedly stealing about $100 million in gems and watches from a Brinks armored truck at a Lebec rest stop.
- Authorities recovered portions of the stolen gold, diamonds, rubies, emeralds and luxury timepieces during search warrants executed on June 16.
- Prosecutors allege the defendants trailed the Brinks semitruck more than 300 miles from a San Mateo jewelry show to Buttonwillow and Lebec before breaking in to seize 24 bags of cargo.
- All seven face federal counts of conspiracy to commit theft from interstate and foreign shipment, and five are also charged under the Hobbs Act for interference with commerce by robbery.
- If convicted, the five defendants with robbery counts could face up to 20 years in prison along with additional sentences for related electronics thefts earlier in 2022.
