Seven Charged After Officers Injured in Bega Vinnies Carpark Drug Probe

Police say a routine drug inquiry escalated when suspects confronted officers in the op shop carpark.

  • Police were called about 12:10pm Tuesday to reports of drug activity at the Vinnies op shop carpark on Gipps Street in Bega.
  • Officers allege a 26-year-old resisted, was found with about 4 grams of methamphetamine, armed himself with a hammer and tried to flee.
  • Four people from a parked car allegedly surrounded a constable, and a 40-year-old later allegedly punched a sergeant, causing a head injury and an eye laceration.
  • A search of the vehicle allegedly found drugs, an extendable baton, a prohibited weapon, paraphernalia and scales, and police said three officers were injured without serious harm.
  • The 26- and 40-year-old men were refused bail to face court today, a 34-year-old was granted conditional bail, and four others received court attendance notices with dates in late November and December.
