Seven ASU Players Ask School to Put Coach Greg Powers on Leave

The players' 26-page anonymous letter seeks an outside investigation and interim staff to examine alleged failures in hydration, cooling and medical care.

Overview

  • The players submitted the 26-page letter to ASU President Michael Crow on Monday and said the Aug. 20 workout that left Matthew Mayich hospitalized did not follow the university's heat-illness policies.
  • They directly contest ASU senior vice president James Rund’s initial review, saying the session ran about 75 minutes, water breaks were minimal or withheld, and visible signs of heat distress were ignored.
  • The letter alleges there was no cold-water immersion tub, no ice, and that Mayich was left in direct sun and twice sat upright contrary to recommended emergency cooling steps.
  • The workout was led by outside consultant Timothy Ziesel without a formal written training plan or contract, the university's report found, and the players say Ziesel was not properly vetted or certified.
  • ASU Police are investigating and will forward their file to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office for review, and the players asked that coaches be placed on administrative leave and an interim staff be named while an outside probe proceeds.
