Seutloali and Jepchumba Win Soweto Marathon Titles

Late moves decided both races after early leaders faded.

Overview

  • Joseph Seutloali of Lesotho surged clear to win the men’s marathon in 2:20:09, finishing ahead of South Africa’s Ntsindiso Mphakathi in 2:20:24 and defending champion Onalenna Khonkhobe in 2:20:39.
  • Kenya’s Margaret Jepchumba claimed the women’s crown in 2:34:33, with Zambia’s Elizabeth Mokoloma second in 2:35:59 and South Africa’s Gerda Steyn third in 2:37:00.
  • Mosotho runner Jobo Khatoane led much of the men’s race before being caught by a three-man chase group in the closing kilometres.
  • Seutloali added the Soweto victory to his Two Oceans ultra-marathon title from earlier this year, highlighting sustained form across major South African road races.
  • The 30th edition drew a strong international field, with Mphakathi and Steyn the first South African man and woman to finish.
