Settlement Ends The Villages Cross Dispute With $243,000 Payout

The deal closes a five-year fight over CDD 8’s enforcement of a lawn-ornament rule.

Overview

  • The agreement requires CDD 8 to pay $173,000 in court and legal fees and $70,000 to Wayne and Bonnie Anderson.
  • The 12-inch white cross, affixed to a potted plant in the Andersons’ front yard, will remain in place under the settlement.
  • The conflict began in April 2019 with a notice of violation and $25-per-day fines that Anderson said grew to about $44,000.
  • CDD 8 sued after the couple refused to remove the cross, and a judge later directed the parties to settle out of court.
  • Wayne Anderson has since joined the CDD 8 board, reporters counted about a dozen similar crosses nearby, and the district did not respond to requests for comment.
