Service Costs in Buenos Aires Rise Again as Transport Leads November Gains

An IIEP snapshot links tariff realignment and a 44% subsidy cut to a services basket that has jumped 525% since late 2023, far beyond overall prices.

Overview

  • An unsubsidized average AMBA household spent ARS 173,480 on electricity, gas, water and public transport in November, up 1.8% month over month and 30% year over year.
  • Tariff components moved higher in November: gas fixed charge rose 3.5% and variable 4%, electricity fixed 3.6% and variable 3.8%, and the weighted bus fare increased 6.6%.
  • Transport remains the biggest cost driver, representing 47% of the services basket according to the IIEP report.
  • Households now cover 52% of service costs through tariffs while the State absorbs the remaining 48%, reflecting the reported reduction in subsidies.
  • Local reporting highlights mounting strain as some families devote more than half their income to basic services, retirees cite shares near 80%, and merchants face higher fixed costs amid weaker sales.
