Series of Earthquakes Strike Isle of Mull
Residents report houses shaking and liken the experience to a car crash, with the tremors felt as far as the Scottish mainland.
- Residents on the Isle of Mull experienced a 3.3 magnitude earthquake followed by five smaller tremors, with the impact felt within 50km of the epicentre, including on the Scottish mainland.
- Residents described the sensation as similar to a car crashing into their homes, with houses shaking, windows and doors rattling, and sofas vibrating.
- The earthquakes were all at a depth of 7km, except for one quake which measured one on the Richter scale and was at a depth of 6km.
- David Galloway, a seismologist with the British Geological Survey, said that the UK experiences around 300 earthquakes a year, with north west Scotland being one of the most active places.
- Despite the shock, local resident Alasdair Satchel noted that the unusual experience brought a lot of people together in a quick and unexpected way.
