September Thali Costs Fall, Says Crisil, With Veg Down 10% and Non-Veg 6%

Declines in key staples drove the relief for home cooks.

Overview

  • Crisil reports year-on-year drops in September of 10% for vegetarian thalis and 6% for non-vegetarian thalis.
  • Key drivers were cheaper potatoes (down 31%), onions (down 46%), tomatoes (down 8%) and pulses (down 16%) compared with a year earlier.
  • Rising input costs limited the decline, with vegetable oil up 21% year-on-year and LPG cylinder prices up 6%.
  • Average September costs were Rs 26.30 for a vegetarian thali and Rs 52.60 for a non-vegetarian thali versus Rs 29.10 and Rs 56 a year ago.
  • Crisil notes broiler accounts for about half the non-veg thali cost and fell roughly 1% year-on-year, while some outlets cite a month-on-month broiler rise that lifted non-veg costs.
