Overview
- Because Sept. 1 is Labor Day, September’s Supplemental Security Income was issued early on Friday, Aug. 29, per the SSA calendar.
- Regular retirement, spousal, and survivor benefits will follow the standard birthdate schedule in September: Sept. 10 for birthdays 1–10, Sept. 17 for 11–20, and Sept. 24 for 21–31, with pre–May 1997 beneficiaries paid Sept. 3.
- The SSA began sending overpayment notices on April 25 and started withholding up to 50% of monthly checks after roughly 90 days, with options to request reconsideration, a waiver, or adjusted repayment terms.
- An SSA inspector general report cited nearly $72 billion in improper payments from fiscal 2015–2022 and $23 billion in uncollected overpayments as of September 2023, underscoring the recovery push.
- For planning, the SSA has posted payment calendars through late 2025 and into 2026, and 2025 SSI maximums are listed as up to $967 for individuals, $1,450 for couples, and $484 for eligible essential caregivers.
