Overview

  • The eclipse is safe to watch with the naked eye, with binoculars or a telescope recommended for detail and tripods useful for long-exposure photos.
  • In India, the event begins at 8:58 pm IST on September 7, reaches totality from 11:00 pm to 12:22 am IST, and ends at 1:25 am IST on September 8.
  • Australians can expect totality to start around 3:30 am in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Hobart, about 3:00 am in Adelaide and Darwin, and 1:30 am in Perth, with the maximum roughly 45 minutes later.
  • Major Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, Lucknow, Hyderabad and Chandigarh are positioned for a clear view, subject to local weather and haze.
  • The Moon’s red hue occurs as Earth’s atmosphere filters and bends sunlight, with the exact shade influenced by dust, pollution or aerosols.
