Separate South Side Head-On and Lemont I-55 Crashes Kill Five and Injure Two

  • A head-on crash at about 3:04 a.m. on June 22 in the 11200 block of South Stony Island Avenue involved a north-bound red Dodge Challenger and a south-bound black Dodge Challenger.
  • The Far South Side collision killed three occupants between 19 and 21 years old and left a 20-year-old passenger in fair condition at the University of Chicago hospital.
  • At approximately 3:26 a.m., a multi-vehicle crash on northbound I-55 near Lemont Road claimed two lives and sent at least one person to an area hospital.
  • Northbound lanes of Interstate 55 were initially shut with traffic diverted onto the Veterans Memorial Tollway before reopening later Sunday.
