Separate House Fires in Three Brazilian Cities Leave Two Dead, One Critically Injured

Investigators are probing the causes, including a case suspected to have started from candles after a blackout.

Overview

  • In Volta Redonda (RJ), a man of about 60 died in a residential blaze as firefighters rescued a 91-year-old woman unharmed and a forensic team was called to determine the cause.
  • Firefighters in Volta Redonda reported the victim was a hoarder who became trapped among accumulated materials, and the body was taken to the Instituto Médico Legal.
  • In Lauro de Freitas (BA), Idevandro Barcelar, 42, was found carbonized after a house fire, with police working on the hypothesis of an accidental start from candles used during a prior blackout caused by heavy rains.
  • In Rio Claro (SP), a 54-year-old man sustained burns over about 90% of his body and remains in the ICU at Hospital Nossa Senhora de Lourdes, while a 21-year-old suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to UPA 29.
