Overview

  • Sepang International Circuit stated reports that Formula 1 is coming back are untrue and unrelated to ongoing MotoGP discussions.
  • CEO Azhan Shafriman previously called the 2017 F1 exit a mistake but warned a return is difficult, citing a quoted US$70 million race fee, RM10–20 million in setup costs and totals exceeding RM300 million a year.
  • He noted strong political and corporate interest in reviving F1, though any move must contend with a waiting list for calendar slots and would take time to yield returns.
  • MotoGP hosting rights run through 2026, and Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh says renewal depends on detailed data showing economic return, job creation and skills transfer to satisfy the finance ministry.
  • SIC cites a 6.3x return on investment and a 2024 record attendance of 184,923 for MotoGP, with the 2025 round scheduled for late October.
