SEPA Expands Flood Warnings as Rain and Thaw Elevate Risk Across Scotland

Met Office yellow alerts remain in place into Monday morning, with forecasters citing rapid snowmelt as the main driver of potential flooding.

Overview

  • SEPA now lists nine flood warnings and 13 flood alerts covering large parts of Scotland, including Dumfries and Galloway, North Ayrshire, Orkney and Tayside.
  • Flood risk is greatest in the west and north, where heavy rain is combining with rising temperatures to create fast runoff from melting snow.
  • Yellow warnings for rain and wind cover north‑western Scotland into Monday morning, with up to 110mm of rain possible on some hills and gusts near 85mph in the Outer Hebrides and Highlands.
  • The Scottish Government Resilience Room met for a seventh day to coordinate partners, as ministers urge the public to monitor updates from SEPA, the Met Office and Police Scotland.
  • Transport disruption continues, with A83 traffic routed via the Old Military Road pending a hillside inspection by midday Monday and with several ferry routes cancelled and some rail services facing delays.
